The 5 R's of Waste Management
Everyone can make a difference when it comes to reducing the footprint on our environment. As part of our Environmental policy we underline the importance of proper waste management and our responsibility to reduce the impact of our activities on the environment we work and live in. Waste is an important aspect of the impact we have as a company and as an individual on the environment.
To manage our waste as a company and to further increase the awareness around the role everyone can and should play in limiting the negative impact on the environment we apply the 5 R’s of waste management:
Refuse: saying no to items that can contribute to the waste stream. This step has the biggest impact on decreasing the amount of waste generated and is taken at the source.
Reduce: reducing the amount of waste, e.g. by opting for products that have lesser packaging or are more durable.
Reuse: extends the life of items and prevents them from ending up in landfills prematurely.
Repurpose: finding new uses for old items. It doesn't only save money but also diverts waste from landfills.
Recycle: concerting waste materials into new products which significantly reduces the need for new resources.
Applying the waste management
The 5 R’s of waste management provide a guideline to take steps at different levels of waste management everyone (including companies) can take to reduce the amount of waste. It will further increase the awareness around the difference everyone can make to reduce the negative impact of waste on the environment. Following the 5 R’s can significantly reduce the amount of waste, thus minimizing soil and water pollution. Less waste also contributes to lower emissions and reduces the required energy for manufacturing and waste management. There is also a positive financial aspect: Buying less, reusing what you already have and repurposing items (at work and at home) means spending less on new products and reducing overall costs.
